Puerto Rico will have a hot morning on Tuesday followed by showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, with a risk of urban and stream flooding, particularly in sectors of the island’s interior and north, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in San Juan. Forecasters expect showers developing over nearby waters to move toward windward areas overnight and in the early morning, while daytime heating will concentrate rain activity inland during the afternoon.

The convergence of sea breezes and terrain effects will favor slow-moving showers and thunderstorms, mainly from the interior toward north-central Puerto Rico and the San Juan metropolitan area. These conditions could produce locally heavy rain, frequent lightning and water accumulating on roads and in areas with poor drainage, along with a risk of urban flooding and small-stream flooding.

The NWS also maintains a high-surf advisory for sectors of the north and northwest coasts, where breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet could hit exposed beaches, plus a warning for life-threatening rip currents; beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water at exposed beaches. The maritime risk is expected to continue Wednesday before gradually improving.

Rain and thunderstorm activity is forecast to decrease Wednesday, but tropical humidity will increase again from Wednesday night, favoring a rainier pattern from Thursday through much of the weekend.
