Why this matters: For residents of Añasco, Las Marías, and Mayagüez, the flood advisory means a risk of urban flooding, hazardous road conditions, and disruptions to daily life.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Juan issued a flood advisory on Tuesday for Añasco, Las Marías and Mayagüez because of heavy rain associated with thunderstorms. The advisory remains in effect until 6:00 PM. At 4:07 PM, Doppler radar estimated that between 1 and 2.5 inches of rain had already fallen over the area, and the NWS anticipated between 1 and 2 additional inches.
The rain could cause urban flooding and flooding in small streams, rises in channels that are normally dry, and water accumulating on roads. The NWS warned that low-level crossings in mountainous areas can become particularly dangerous during intense rainfall. The agency urged drivers not to attempt to cross flooded roads and to use alternate routes.
