The work week begins with variable weather across Puerto Rico, marked by heat and passing showers, the National Weather Service (NWS) office in San Juan reported Monday. Showers and thunderstorms will concentrate mainly over the interior and west of the island, and some may affect eastern sectors in the morning. Daytime heat will be felt particularly in coastal and urban areas, where vulnerable people should take precautions.
In the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms could affect school, sports and outdoor activities, especially in the interior, north and west. Because winds will be weak from the east-southeast, sea breezes and the mountainous terrain will have more influence on how storms form and move, so some thunderstorms could drift slowly and produce heavy rain, with the possibility of urban flooding and swollen streams.
The most intense storms could also bring frequent lightning and strong wind gusts. The rain probability is 40%. Towns with elevated flood risk include Arecibo, Camuy, Hatillo, San Sebastián, Moca, Añasco, Las Marías, Maricao, Adjuntas, Lares, Utuado, Jayuya, Ciales, Orocovis and Morovis, among others.
On Atlantic beaches there is a moderate risk of dangerous rip currents, and stronger northwest swell arriving Monday night will raise wave heights and make marine conditions increasingly hazardous through midweek. These threats will continue through Tuesday and are expected to diminish by Wednesday.
