Why this matters: The eight-year gap in island life expectancy, with nine in 10 women but only seven in 10 men reaching age 70, is driven largely by violent deaths among young Puerto Rican men, the Institute of Statistics figures show.

Puerto Rico women have a life expectancy of 84 years, while men’s is 76, according to figures from the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics discussed on the show Los Datos Son Los Datos. Political analyst Jay Fonseca spoke with Alberto Velázquez Estrada of the Institute of Statistics about the gap in life expectancy between men and women on the island.

The main factors cited include violent deaths among young men and violence. The data also show that nine out of 10 women reach age 70, compared with seven out of 10 men. Velázquez Estrada noted that other Latin American countries show similar statistics, so the difference in life expectancy reflects a gap also observed across the region.
