A strong thunderstorm hit Villalba and its surroundings on Saturday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to urge the public to stay alert to weather conditions. At 2:17 PM, Doppler radar detected a strong storm over the Palomas sector, near Villalba, that was nearly stationary. The advisory was in effect until 3:15 PM. According to the NWS, the system could produce wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour and pea-sized hail.
Strong winds could knock down tree branches and dislodge unsecured objects, and could cause minor damage to outdoor items. The agency reported that the storm was producing frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and reminded the public that lightning can strike up to 10 miles from a storm, recommending people seek shelter inside a building or vehicle. Torrential rains associated with the storm could also cause flash flooding.
The NWS urged drivers not to attempt to cross flooded roads and to stay attentive to weather conditions.
