A decomposing body found Monday behind a residence on Carrau road in the Sábalos sector of Mayagüez belongs to Mariel Patricia Crespo Cortés, 33, a Mayagüez resident, the Identification Unit of the Institute of Forensic Sciences (ICF) confirmed. The discovery was reported at 12:40 PM by a call to the district police station after someone saw the shrouded body, covered with sheets, abandoned in the area.
Authorities are holding a 60-year-old man and his 41-year-old son, both with criminal records, in connection with the ongoing investigation. The autopsy was performed Tuesday, but the ICF said in writing that the determination of cause and manner of death remains pending the results of forensic analyses and information arising from the Police investigation. The victim had a criminal record for violations of the Controlled Substances Act.
An authorized family member was notified of the identification. The preliminary theory is aimed at confirming or ruling out whether the woman lived with the detainees and whether, after her death from causes unknown at this time, they removed her from the place. On Tuesday afternoon a search warrant was being executed on the second floor of a residence on the property where the body was found, in search of evidence.
