  • Senate Bill 1096, by Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz, creates a new Judicial Branch Law and repeals the 2003 Judiciary Law, despite Chief Justice Maite Oronoz Rodríguez’s veto request.
  • Senate Bill 1005 raises the age limit for digital driver’s license renewal from 70 to 75 years.
  • Road PR-447 in San Sebastián is named after Justo Medina Esteves, and November becomes the Month of Awareness and Prevention of the Sexualization of Minors under Senate Bill 1208.

Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González Colón signed a measure on Tuesday, November 3 that establishes a new Judicial Branch Law of Puerto Rico and repeals the 2003 Judiciary Law. Senate Bill 1096, authored by Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz, sets the new legislation governing the Judicial Branch and also amends other related laws. The bill had drawn opposition from Supreme Court Chief Justice Maite Oronoz Rodríguez, who had asked the governor to veto it.

The judicial measure is part of a package of four bills and resolutions La Fortaleza said the governor made law on November 3. Among the others, Senate Bill 1005, authored by senators Roxanna Soto and Karen Román, amends the Vehicles and Traffic Law to raise from 70 to 75 the age limit for digitally renewing a driver’s license, aiming to expand digital service options for older adults and streamline services at the Department of Transportation and Public Works.

Senate Joint Resolution 159, presented by Senator Jeison Rosa and co-sponsored by Karen Román, Wilmer Reyes and Luis Daniel Colón, names road PR-447 in San Sebastián after Justo Medina Esteves in recognition of his career as a public servant and mayor. Senate Bill 1208, also by Rivera Schatz, declares November the Month of Awareness and Prevention of the Sexualization of Minors.
