Puerto Rican Singer Lucía Jirau Releases Salsa Version of Daddy Yankee Hit to Close Out 2026

Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Lucía Jirau is closing out 2026 with a salsa reinterpretation of "¿Qué tengo que hacer?", the well-known song by Daddy Yankee (Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez), turning the urban classic into a fresh, danceable tropical version that preserves the essence of the original composition. Harry Aponte handles the musical production, piano and choruses, with David Marcano on percussion, José Iván Rodríguez on bass, Glenn Díaz on trumpets, Ángel Torres on saxophone and Víctor Vázquez on trombone.

Jirau, from Caguas, says the release is a bet on fusing generations and musical styles at a time when salsa keeps finding new forms of expression. Earlier this year she also released "Algo contigo", an acoustic piano bolero version with Aponte; "Un no sé qué", a salsa version of a merengue she recorded last year; and "Turista", an intimate take on the song popularized by Bad Bunny.

She also won the 2026 Intercontinental Music Award in the Tropical Salsa category for her own song "Salsa hasta que amanezca"; the US-based InterContinental Music Awards recognize musicians based on their cultural and continental origin.
