Puerto Rico’s metropolitan area and northeast will see an active afternoon of showers on Thursday as southwest winds prevail across the archipelago. National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologist María Novoa said there is currently an elevated flood risk for those sectors due to the development of rain over the mountains. She advised people getting off work at 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM to take precautions, and warned drivers not to cross flooded roads but to turn around instead.
The heat risk will be limited during the day, although Novoa noted that heat indices above 100 degrees Fahrenheit remain possible because of humidity. She explained that the expected showers could develop earlier than forecast, which would shorten the heat period compared with recent days when temperatures were still near 100 degrees at 5:00 PM. As for maritime conditions, the risk of rip currents is low, but a swell is expected to arrive on Friday that would mainly affect beaches on the north and east coasts of Puerto Rico.
