The Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico warned that New Fortress Energy’s failure to deliver natural gas to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) threatens the certified fiscal plans and the island’s economic recovery. The warning appears in an urgent motion the Board filed Friday, October 30, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. The motion asks to intervene as a plaintiff in PREPA’s suit against NFEnergía, New Fortress Energy and Atlantic Energy Holdings. Tolling is the mechanism requiring New Fortress to let other suppliers deliver gas through its San Juan terminal when it fails to deliver.

Buying a home in Puerto Rico requires annual income above $100,000, far higher than the island’s median household income, according to an analysis by Estudios Técnicos, a planning research and consulting organization. The analysis found the average price of a used home reached $223,155 in 2025, up 4% from the prior year. New homes averaged $421,191, up 7.1%. Estudios Técnicos estimates a household needs $105,297 a year to afford a home, against a median household income of $34,730.

A federal court has intervened in the dispute between the government of Puerto Rico and New Fortress Energy over uncertainty about the supply of natural gas for electricity generation on the island. The court scheduled a hearing for Monday, November 2. Some nevertheless believe Puerto Rico could have more options. The lack of natural gas is forcing generators to run on diesel, which could increase energy production costs.

A diesel fuel spill was reported Friday morning, October 30, in the waters of San Juan Bay, in the area of the United States Coast Guard base. The Coast Guard gave its first public account of the emergency in a post on Saturday, October 31. According to the agency, pollution response personnel traced the spill to a fuel tank tied to a construction project underway at the facilities. The tank was secured and the spill contained.

The Palmeras development in the Florida Afuera neighborhood of Barceloneta completed the handover of its 38 single-family homes on Saturday, October 31, after the government led distribution of the final 22 residences. The $11,586,200 project, funded through the federal Community Development Block Grant-Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) program, delivered its first 16 units in June 2026, one year after groundbreaking in June 2025. The homes are aimed at eligible participants of the Housing Department’s Single-Family Housing Program. Families must meet program requirements and hold a housing voucher.

New Progressive Party (PNP) Sen. Héctor Joaquín Sánchez confirmed on social media that he is under investigation over the participation of "some young people" from Loíza in a political activity held in Camuy. Joaquín Sánchez said that information will be evidenced during the corresponding proceedings. He blamed the complaint on his adversaries from the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) in Loíza.
