Pedro Xavier Montañez Fernández, a 30-year-old man who was convicted in the El Burro narcotics trafficking case, was murdered in a business in Caguas. Montañez Fernández was killed in the early morning of June 5 at El Nuevo Amanecer, located on PR-172 in Caguas.
He had pleaded guilty to conspiracy and firearms charges related to narcotics trafficking and was sentenced to 90 months in prison and six years of supervised release in December 2020. The Federal Probation Office notified Judge Pedro Delgado Hernández of Montañez Fernández's death, which was confirmed by the Institute of Forensic Sciences on June 9.
Montañez Fernández was a member of the El Burro gang, which was accused of trafficking controlled substances in areas of Caguas, Aguas Buenas, and Cidra, primarily in public housing. A total of 44 people were charged in the case, with Montañez Fernández listed as number 13.
