Heat Alert Issued for 63 Municipalities in Puerto Rico

Updated Jul 6, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

The National Weather Service (SNM) in San Juan issued a heat alert for 63 municipalities in Puerto Rico on Monday. Meteorologist Lee Ann Inglés stated that heat indices could reach 108 to 111 degrees Fahrenheit between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. The SNM warned that the combination of high temperatures and humidity would make for an uncomfortable day, especially for vulnerable populations such as people over 65 and children.

The agency advised taking precautions when outdoors, including wearing light and loose clothing, staying hydrated, and taking breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. The SNM also recommended scheduling outdoor activities for early morning or evening hours. Additionally, the Administration of Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) suggested taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion.

The SNM expects an increase in humidity to result in more showers in some areas, particularly in western Puerto Rico, and warned of a moderate risk of rip currents along the northern, eastern, and southern coasts of the island.
