Learning from Sea Turtles on Puerto Rico's Beaches

Updated Jul 8, 2026 · via Primera Hora

During the summer, Puerto Rico's beaches become outdoor classrooms where children learn about protecting sea turtles, specifically the leatherback sea turtle, as they supervise the newborns' journey to the sea after hatching. Karen Schneck, a volunteer from 7 Quillas, one of 14 turtle conservation groups, emphasizes the importance of caring for the turtles and educates onlookers about the need to conserve this pelagic turtle.

Lehyrin Cruz took his three daughters to Ocean Park beach in San Juan to learn about the turtles and witness the newborns' migration to the North Atlantic Ocean. Eduardo Álvarez, president of 7 Quillas, highlights the need to disseminate information to new generations to protect this species, which can grow up to 1.5 to 2.4 meters and weigh between 250 and 700 kilograms.

This year, 18 nests have been recorded in the San Juan metropolitan area. The organization also conducts monthly beach cleanups.
