The Puerto Rico women's softball team, ranked third in the world, opened the WBSC World Cup group stage with a shutout against Peru in Lima, Peru. Taran Alvelo pitched five innings, allowing only one hit and striking out six Peruvian players. Puerto Rico scored in the first inning with a double by Kairi Rodríguez, and added two more runs in the third inning with RBIs from Aleshia Ocasio and Kathyria García.
The team's fourth run came in the sixth inning due to an error on a hit by Isabella Foran, allowing Luna Taboas to score. Coach Jorge David Santos praised the team's performance, saying the pitchers were always attacking the Peruvian batters and dominating the game. Puerto Rico will face Venezuela on Wednesday, July 15 at 11:00 am (Puerto Rico time).
Other results from the first day of competition included Venezuela defeating the Philippines 8-5 and Japan beating Great Britain 9-1.
