Puerto Rico started strong in the group stage of the 2027 Women's Softball World Cup Finals, defeating Peru 4-0 on Tuesday in Lima. The win brings them closer to securing one of two spots for the World Cup Finals in Australia next April and a potential Olympic berth for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Pitcher Taran Alvelo led the team, striking out six and allowing only one hit in five innings. The Puerto Rican offense took control early, with Kairi Rodríguez driving in the first run in the first inning.
Aleshia Ocasio and Kathyria García added to the lead with singles in the third inning, and Luna Taboas scored in the sixth after a Peruvian defensive error. Puerto Rico will face Venezuela, also undefeated, on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. local time, after Venezuela defeated the Philippines 8-5 in their debut.
