Dominican Immigrant Released from ICE Custody

Inocencia Rodríguez, a Dominican immigrant, was released from the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at 8:30 pm on Friday after District Judge María Antongiorgi Jordán issued an order for her immediate release. Rodríguez was received by family and friends outside the ICE detention center in Guaynabo.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Puerto Rico reported that Judge Antongiorgi Jordán had also ordered a bond hearing to be held on or before July 21. The judge's order stated that Rodríguez should be released immediately if a bond hearing was not provided or if it was dismissed due to lack of jurisdiction.

The ACLU's legal director in Puerto Rico, Fermín Arraiza Navas, stated that the judge's order was necessary to protect Rodríguez's due process and that of all individuals facing discriminatory public policy. Arraiza Navas criticized the decision of Immigration Judge Elvin Talavera Peraza, who had refused to allow evidence that Rodríguez had approved family petitions and provisional waivers, during a custody redetermination hearing on July 15.
