Puerto Rico's men's basketball team, composed of players under 20, debuted in the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo with a resounding 120-41 victory over Jamaica. The game, played at the Arena Banreservas Profesor Virgilio Travieso Soto, was dominated by Puerto Rico from start to finish. The team took control from the initial jump, winning the first quarter 27-8 and leading 56-23 at halftime.
Six Puerto Rican players scored in double digits, led by Dwight Gaines with 20 points, three rebounds, and eight assists. Alexander Montes added 18 points and five rebounds, while Vincent Stewart Jr. recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Montes attributed the team's solid performance to the chemistry they have developed on and off the court.
The team's coach, Jorge Rincón, credited the victory to a process that began before the Games, integrating players from different youth selections and bringing back talents who play outside of Puerto Rico. The team's goal is to compete for a medal and serve as a base for the national adult team.
