The last branch of the historic Ceiba tree in Ponce fell on Monday, marking the final chapter of one of the city's most important natural and cultural symbols. Ponce Mayor Marlese Sifre reacted to the event with a message on social media, highlighting the tree's historical value and stating that its legacy will remain part of the city's identity.
The tree, located in Parque de la Ceiba, was estimated to be over 500 years old and had been a part of the city's cultural history. However, it had been deteriorating for years, losing a significant portion of its canopy in 2011, and was confirmed dead in October 2021.
The tree's image was featured in the work of Puerto Rican painter Francisco Oller and was a reference point in poems, writings, and stories about Ponce. Mayor Sifre assured that the municipality will honor the tree's memory and preserve its legacy for future generations.
