Puerto Rico's athletics team achieved a historic performance at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, winning 21 medals, including five gold, seven silver, and nine bronze. This surpasses the 12 medals won three years ago in San Salvador.
According to Carlos Guzmán, technical director of the Puerto Rico Athletics Federation (Fapur), this is the second-best performance by Puerto Rico in the Central American Games, with the best being 24 medals in 1938. Guzmán had projected 15 to 20 medals, but the team exceeded expectations.
Notable performers included José Figueroa and Alysbeth Félix, who together won six medals. Figueroa won a gold medal, while Fabiola Declet's bronze in the heptathlon was an unexpected addition to the medal count.
