Christian Dalmau, the coach of the Vaqueros de Bayamón basketball team, stated that the team wanted to prove that their success went beyond the big-name reinforcements they had in previous seasons. Despite not having the same level of reinforcements this year, the team was able to win their 18th championship title by defeating the Santeros de Aguada in the final.
Dalmau credited the team's native core, led by veteran players, for their success, as well as the contributions of reinforcements Jassel Pérez, Damian Jones, and Chris McCullough. Dalmau also praised his assistant coach, Elías 'Larry' Ayuso, with whom he has a long history of playing and coaching together.
The team finished the season with a 21-12 record, the best in the tournament, earning Dalmau his first Coach of the Year award. Dalmau and Ayuso have now won two championships together as members of the Vaqueros' coaching staff, after never winning a championship together as players.
