The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Juan extended a flood warning until 5:15 p.m. Monday for the western Puerto Rico municipalities of Añasco, Hormigueros and Mayagüez, as heavy rain continued affecting the region. Doppler radar detected strong thunderstorm rains over the warned area, with estimated accumulations of one to two inches, and additional rainfall possible during the warning period.
Officials said conditions could cause minor flooding in urban areas, roads, low-lying spots and areas with drainage problems, as well as rises in creeks and small bodies of water. Besides the three main municipalities, areas that could see flooding include Las Marías, La Playa and Espino. The rain affects a zone crossed by major western watersheds, including the Río Grande de Añasco and Guanajibo river basins, along with other rivers and creeks that respond quickly to periods of intense rainfall.
The NWS urged residents to monitor weather conditions and avoid crossing flooded roads, noting that water depth and force can be difficult to determine.
