Hormigueros

Hormigueros is a small municipality in the western region of Puerto Rico, situated inland northeast of Cabo Rojo, northwest of San Germán, and south of Mayagüez. It covers about 29 km² and is organized into five barrios plus Hormigueros Pueblo, with a population of roughly 15,654 as of 2020.

The town lies about 71 miles from San Juan and forms part of the Mayagüez Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded in 1692, Hormigueros is one of the older municipalities in the western part of the island, with a long history reflected in its traditional town layout centered on Hormigueros Pueblo.

Its position between Cabo Rojo, San Germán, and Mayagüez places it within a well-connected cluster of western towns, and its inclusion in the Mayagüez metro area ties its economy and daily life closely to that larger urban center.
