Puerto Rico Producers Anticipate Shortage of Pascuas for Christmas

As Christmas approaches, ornamental plant producers in Puerto Rico are preparing to sell traditional poinsettias, but possibly in smaller quantities than in previous years. René Llerandi, owner of Trópico Wholesale, one of the largest Easter lily producers on the Island, explained that production has become more difficult due to climate change and drought. Puerto Rico has experienced a drought since May, with 65.49% of the territory under moderate to extreme drought conditions as of September 29.

Llerandi reported that most producers have water wells, but it is still a challenge. He estimated that the average shortage of pascuas, or Easter lilies, will be between 100,000 and 200,000 plants, as three to four producers have closed operations due to high costs. Typically, Puerto Rico produces around 800,000 to one million pascuas, but this year's harvest has been affected by the drought and high production costs.
