Former Luquillo Mayor Juan Benabe Guzmán Passes Away at 101

Juan Benabe Guzmán, the former mayor of Luquillo, has passed away at the age of 101, as announced by the President of the Chamber of Representatives, Carlos 'Johnny' Méndez Núñez. Benabe Guzmán was the first candidate from the New Progressive Party (PNP) to become mayor of Luquillo, serving from 1969 to 1972 and again from 1977 to 1984. He was born on May 15, 1925, in Luquillo and was a founding member of the PNP.

During his tenure, he implemented projects in areas such as health, education, housing, sports, and recreation. Notable achievements include the creation of the Diagnostic and Treatment Center, construction of parks and sports facilities, and the establishment of the Luquillo Municipal Band. He also promoted education by constructing schools and promoting the establishment of colleges and universities, including the Puerto Rico Junior College and the University of Turabo.

Méndez Núñez described Benabe Guzmán as an 'integro leader' who dedicated his life to the well-being of his people and left a lasting legacy in Luquillo.
