The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory for 59 Puerto Rico municipalities on Thursday, effective from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with heat indices expected between 102 and 111 degrees Fahrenheit. Municipalities under the advisory include Caguas, San Juan, Ponce, Bayamón, Carolina, Mayagüez, Guaynabo, Fajardo, Arecibo, Aguadilla and 49 others across the island.
The NWS also warned that the high temperatures are raising wildfire risk, with all south coast municipalities and parts of eastern Puerto Rico under conditions favorable for rapid fire spread. Officials said the heat could affect most people sensitive to high temperatures, particularly older adults, young children, people with chronic illnesses, and those working or exercising outdoors, especially without access to cooling systems or adequate hydration.
The NWS recommended staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and seeking air-conditioned spaces when possible. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advised outdoor workers to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, especially during the hottest hours, to reduce the risk of heat-related complications.
