Puerto Rico's Department of Justice announced it will charge a 16-year-old, in police custody since Saturday, as an adult for the killing of his grandmother in Guaynabo. Lt. José Carrión of the Criminal Investigations Corps (CIC) in Bayamón said several people were summoned for interviews, with sworn statements to be taken to prepare charges for filing the case, which he said would be filed the same day; prosecutors would decide whether to charge first-degree murder.
The case is being handled by prosecutor Glorimar García and minors' advocate María Rivera Reverón. No indication has emerged of the teen having a health condition or prior record with authorities. The incident occurred just after 2:00 p.m. in a shopping center parking lot in Guaynabo.
The victim was identified as Lourdes Pérez Kercadó, 67, the suspect's grandmother; a 22-year-old man, her brother, suffered stab wounds and remains in stable condition at a nearby hospital. Police recovered a knife and Pérez Kercadó's vehicle at the scene. Witnesses said the incident stemmed from an argument among the suspect, the victim, and the brother while the family was shopping, possibly beginning inside the car.
