Puerto Rico's Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC) has invested $999,975 in the Construyendo Nuestro Futuro pilot project, which aims to help 75 young people complete high school and acquire workforce skills. The project, funded through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) State Reserve and the DDEC's Conexión Laboral program, will serve young people in Caguas, Loíza, and neighboring municipalities.
Participants will receive alternative education, hands-on training, and support services to address their academic and personal needs. The initiative, led by Nuestra Escuela Inc., seeks to connect young people with educational and employment opportunities while strengthening community-based support networks. The goal is for participants to earn their high school diplomas by June 2027 and develop occupational skills to improve their employment prospects and economic self-sufficiency.
DDEC Secretary Carlos J. Ríos Pierluisi stated that the project will establish an integrated pathway linking education, occupational training, and employment for young people who have left school or are at risk of dropping out.
