Loíza Mayor Julia Nazario stated that despite no water rationing, the town still lacks water due to grease and oil in the Canovanillas river, which supplies water to the municipality. The issue affects a baseball tournament with 250 children from 12 Latin American and Caribbean countries. The Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AAA) sent 14 water trucks to areas of greatest need and installed 14 portable toilets in parks where the tournament will take place.
Nazario expressed concern for the visiting children, who are being attended to as best as possible despite the water crisis. She also mentioned that uniforms for the children were washed by hand or in cisterns, and thanked the mayor of Río Grande for securing a laundry service to wash the uniforms. The municipality is seeking 1,000 cases of bottled water to distribute to those in need, particularly the elderly and bedridden.
Nazario acknowledged the economic limitations of Loíza but expressed gratitude for donations from organizations that have helped provide water to the town.
