Luis González Delgado, executive president of the Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AAA), confirmed that the corporation is evaluating plans for scheduled water interruptions in several plants in the eastern part of Puerto Rico due to decreased river water levels and the possibility of an extended drought season. González Delgado stated that the low precipitation since May has started to affect river water intakes, which are more susceptible to prolonged periods without rain than reservoirs.
The AAA has observed decreases in rivers in Canóvanas, El Yunque, and the eastern area, including the Grande de Loíza and La Plata river basins. González Delgado mentioned that the AAA will hold internal meetings to discuss operational plans and a meeting with the Servicio Nacional de Meteorología (SNM) to evaluate climate projections before making decisions.
If it does not rain in the coming months, the AAA may need to take measures to manage the water resource, potentially including scheduled interruptions.
