Puerto Rico's Economic Activity Index reached 128.6 points in August 2026, up 0.8 percent from July, but year-over-year growth was just 0.1 percent, according to data released by the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC). The results, compiled by the DDEC's Office of Strategy and Business Intelligence, show that only two of the index's four components grew when August 2026 is compared with the same month a year earlier.

Non-agricultural wage employment rose 1.3 percent to 963,400 jobs, while electric power generation grew 2.5 percent to 1,585.7 million kilowatt-hours. In the month-over-month comparison, electric power generation increased 0.8 percent and gasoline consumption rose 0.9 percent compared with July. Governor Jenniffer González said the results reflect the Puerto Rican economy's capacity to maintain its levels of activity.

The Economic Activity Index uses four indicators to measure the overall performance of the economy: non-agricultural wage employment, electric power generation, gasoline consumption, and cement sales.
