A woman faces two counts of child abuse in Puerto Rico after allegedly driving an all-terrain vehicle, known locally as a four track, without protective equipment on a public road in Canóvanas while accompanied by her children, ages five and three. According to the Police, the events occurred on April 15 in the San Isidro neighborhood.

Agents of the Carolina Highway Patrol Division detained Angeliz Calderón López while she was driving the vehicle with both minors aboard. The Department of Justice said the woman was pregnant at the time. Prosecutor Ana M. Cruz Oliver, of the Carolina Prosecutor’s Office, filed the two child abuse charges under Article 53(a) of the law on the prevention of child mistreatment, plus vehicle registration and off-road vehicle infractions under Articles 2.10 and 10.16(a) of the Vehicles and Traffic Law.

Judge Annette Santiago Díaz, of the Carolina court, found probable cause for arrest in absentia and set total bail at $100,000. Agent Mercedes Marín Bermúdez, of the Carolina Criminal Investigations Corps’ Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Division, led the investigation.
