Several Puerto Rico Municipalities Experience Severe Drought

Updated Jun 25, 2026 · via Primera Hora

Seven municipalities in southern and southwestern Puerto Rico have been classified as experiencing severe drought by the US Drought Monitor. The affected municipalities are Cabo Rojo, Lajas, Guánica, Juana Días, Santa Isabel, Salinas, and Coamo.

A significant portion of the island is also experiencing moderate (23.45% of the territory) or abnormal (68.24% of the territory) dryness. Approximately 891,030 people are affected by the drought, which may lead to scheduled interruptions in potable water service, according to Governor Jenniffer González.

The drought is causing delays in planting, scarcity of hay, and strict water rationing, with trees and plants showing signs of stress. The US Drought Monitor reports that short-term dry conditions have led to the development or expansion of dryness and drought in Puerto Rico, with severe drought registered along and near parts of the southern coast.
