Residents of several San Juan communities held a "cacerolazo" protest Thursday night, banging pots and honking car horns while shouting "¡Agua!" to demand restoration of water service amid ongoing outages affecting the metro area. Demonstrations occurred in Santurce, Condado, Calle Loíza, Barrio Obrero, and the streets San Mateo and San Jorge. The protest came shortly after the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) announced Thursday afternoon it had restored service to 152,995 customers affected by scheduled work at the Carraízo dam and the Sergio Cuevas filtration plant, though 17,293 metro-area customers remained without water at that time.
AAA said recovery would continue gradually as network pressure stabilized and pumping systems restarted. Cleaning work at Carraízo increased daily water extraction capacity by 10 million gallons, from 94 million to 104 million gallons per day. On Friday, AAA Executive Director Luis González Delgado told WKAQ 580 that about 11,000 customers still lacked service, concentrated in Trujillo Alto and Gurabo.
In Carolina, pumping stations at Carruzo, Parcelas Campo Rico, and Martín Rodríguez had not resumed operation, while in Canóvanas, the Arca de Noé and Las 400 stations awaited water level recovery. AAA was also working to balance water supply in Isla Verde between the Superaqueduct and the Sergio Cuevas plant.
