Daily Water Watch: Carraízo Rises to 40.94 m, Oct 14

Published Oct 14, 2026, 6:08 AM AST787daily · Original analysis

At a glance

  • Carraízo rose 4 cm to 40.94 m, in the Safe band (Seguridad) — 1.24 m above the Watch line (Observación)
  • La Plata rose 5 cm to 43.50 m, in the Adjustments band (Ajustes) — 3.00 m above the Control line
  • Carraízo is rising — averaging 1 cm a day over the past week; 5.35 in of rain over the watershed this week
  • Day 69 of the metro rotation, the San Juan area’s rationing schedule — interruptions paused since September 2, and AAA has not canceled it; the plan began August 7; levels from AAA’s 5:00 AM chart

Why this matters: The number that matters is the gap to the next band line: 1.24 m for Carraízo, 3.00 m for La Plata. Straight-line dates move every day — the daily check is the point.

Our coverage

San Juan's rationing plan, zones and calendar

This morning’s 5:00 chart from the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) shows Carraízo at 40.94 meters — up 4 centimeters from yesterday. La Plata is at 43.50 meters — up 5 centimeters from yesterday.

Outlook

What the numbers say

The week’s pattern is a split. Carraízo and Cidra are both climbing, though Carraízo’s weekly pace has cooled from 3 cm a day the week before to 1 cm a day now, while La Plata is still losing water but at a much gentler rate than before. The 5.35 inches of rain near Carraízo is the heaviest of the three, yet its response was uneven: a gain the morning after October 10, then a drop of 10 cm after the next wet day. Cidra’s small, steady gains suggest the rain is helping slowly rather than dramatically, and it sits on the observación side of the Adjustments line.

For the next band line, the arithmetic is simple for Carraízo: at this week’s pace it would cross into the Spilling band (Desborde) in about 1 day, around October 15. That is a projection from one week’s rate, not a forecast, and a single dry or wet morning could shift it. La Plata’s fall toward the Control line is more than two months away at the current pace, and its 5 cm rise this morning is a welcome sign that the slide may be easing further. None of these changes can be credited to the metro rotation’s interruptions, which are not running.

What to watch

  • Carraízo: whether the rise survives a dry week — this week’s gain came with 5.35 in of rain nearby.
  • La Plata: whether the slowdown holds — a second week under 6 cm a day would show the decline easing.
  • Cidra: whether the rise survives a dry week — this week’s gain came with 3.15 in of rain nearby.
  • Naranjito: AAA’s Cedro Arriba plan — its calendar runs through October 31; whether AAA extends it, changes the phase or ends it.

Lake levels

The USGS gauge at Carraízo read 40.91 meters at 5:45 AM. The USGS gauge at La Plata read 43.50 meters at 5:45 AM. The USGS gauge at Cidra read 400.66 meters at 5:45 AM.

The gauges report every quarter hour and their readings are provisional; the bands are measured on AAA’s 5:00 chart.

How we read the data

This is the 59th Daily Water Watch (yesterday’s is here). The levels update every morning on the water page.

Levels: AAA’s daily reservoir chart, October 14. Rain: USGS gauges within 12 km of each reservoir. Day counts start August 7, when the metro rotation took effect. Straight-line dates are arithmetic, not forecasts. How we report.
