Coamo is an inland municipality in the south-central region of Puerto Rico, founded in 1579, situated north of Santa Isabel, south of Orocovis and Barranquitas, east of Villalba and Juana Díaz, and west of Aibonito and Salinas. It lies about 31 miles from San Juan, spans roughly 202 square kilometers, and is home to approximately 34,668 people across its 10 barrios plus the Coamo Pueblo downtown area that serves as the administrative center.
As one of the older towns on the island, Coamo has a long-established place in Puerto Rico's south-central geography. It is recognized as a Micropolitan Statistical Area and forms part of the wider Ponce-Yauco-Coamo Combined Statistical Area, reflecting its economic and administrative ties to the surrounding south-central region.
